After extensive trials, he discovered a perfectly balanced recipe combined a rich, full flavour with a bold and invigorating taste. Thus Tanqueray gin was born. Charles’ complex combination of the finest botanicals and spices, along with his distilling expertise were met with instant approval. By 1847 Tanqueray was being exported to the British Colonies. It would become the favourite gin among spice planters and traders as far away as Jamaica. 1847 Tanqueray Gin was making inroads among the spice planters and traders of faraway Jamaica, shown by the recovery of a tall ceramic crock discovered in a shipwreck in Kingston, Jamaica, bearing the legendary ‘Tanqueray Gin’. Legend has it that Tanqueray was the first drink in the White House after the repeal of prohibition. 1830s Charles Tanqueray, (1810-1868), son of a Bedfordshire clergyman, sets up the Bloomsbury Distillery in London in 1830.
